The series provides authors, poets, scholars, and writers of the African diaspora with opportunities to expound on their work while in dialogue with a knowledgeable moderator. Featured writers also engage audience members and this creates lively, stimulating conversations. Topics include an examination of the guest&#8217;s work, the craft of writing, challenges related to writing and publishing, and much more.<\/p>\n<p>The monthly series is always free and open to the college community and the public. A special thanks goes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/books-and-authors\/amazon-literary-partnership-grant-recipients-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon Literary Partnership<\/a> for its support of this program.<\/p>\n<h4>ABOUT JOHN OLIVER KILLENS<\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;Killens was an important figure in the <a href=\"http:\/\/aalbc.com\/authors\/blackartsmovement.htm\">Black Arts Movement<\/a> of the 1960s [and was] a close friend of <a href=\"https:\/\/aalbc.com\/authors\/martin.htm\">Martin Luther King<\/a> and other civil rights activists. [He] created the Black Writer&#8217;s Conference (which has been hosted &#8230; at Medgar Evers College since 1986 and) was a Medgar Evers College professor. Zawadi Morris<\/strong>, founder of BK Reader is the project manager and executive producer of the project.<\/p>\n\t<strong>Willie Perdomo and Friends<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Center, in partnership with <strong>Brooklyn Public Library<\/strong> and the <strong>English Department at Medgar Evers College<\/strong>, celebrated 2019 National Poetry Month with <strong>Willie Perdomo<\/strong>. Perdomo is the author of <em>The Crazy Bunch<\/em> and <em>The Essential Hits of Shorty Bon Bon<\/em>, which was a National Book Critics Circle 2014 Finalist for Poetry. Poets <strong>Nicole Sealey<\/strong> and <strong>Rico Frederick<\/strong> joined Perdomo for an evening of readings and a discussion. The program also featured writer <strong>Sean Anderson<\/strong> and Medgar Evers College English majors <strong>Cherish Pierre-Louis<\/strong> and <strong>Brianna-Christine Alicea<\/strong>.\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/centerforblackliterature.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/padermo.jpg\" alt=\"padermo\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"400\" width=\"800\" title=\"padermo\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/centerforblackliterature.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/killens2.jpg\" alt=\"killens2\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"400\" width=\"800\" title=\"killens2\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t<strong>An Evening with Nicole Sealey and Cheryl Boyce-Taylor<\/strong><br \/>\nThis event was held at the Dweck Cultural Center at <strong>Brooklyn Public Library<\/strong>. Boyce-Taylor opened the program with the reading of her poem &#8220;Devouring the Light, 1968: After Martin Luther King Jr.&#8221; in honor of the 50th anniversary of King&#8217;s death. She then read a selection of poems from her previous collections and her recent book, <em>Arrival<\/em>. Following the poetry readings, Clarence V.
