The days grow\u00a0longer, warmer, and sunnier while animals come out of hibernation. This is how spring looks and feels in most areas of the world. But in\u00a02021 we are fighting for equality and arguing whether climate change is real.\u00a0Amid worldwide adversities, roller skating has always brought people together\u00a0regardless\u00a0of race, sexual orientation, religion, origin, and age.<\/p>\n<p>When I first started going to roller skating rinks in New York City at the age of seventeen, I would see all kinds of individuals dancing in the middle of the rink having a carefree time. I&#8217;ve seen a Muslim\u00a0woman \u201ccouple\u00a0roller skate\u201d with an openly gay man dressed in jean short shorts and a tutu. Others were cheering them on while disco and house music were being played. What\u00a0a sight to see, in my eyes, this was\u00a0what breaking down systematic division among people looked like.<\/p>\n<p>Roller skating has been around since the mid-1750s. It didn&#8217;t significantly impact society until the 1970<span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">&#8216;<\/span>s known as the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Groovy\">Groovy Era<\/a>.&#8221; During this time, roller rinks were popular hangout spots for everyone of all ages. New York and Chicago were and still are known as the\u00a0meccas\u00a0of roller skating because of the distinctive styles\u2019 roller skaters created. One example of a specific type of dance that was created\u00a0was\u00a0known as &#8220;J. B\u00a0skating.&#8221; J.B stands for James Brown. This style consisted of people imitating\u00a0Brown&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/BL-SEB-82447\">dance moves<\/a>. Cher, Vaughan\u00a0Mason\u00a0Crew,\u00a0Midnight\u00a0Star, and\u00a0Billy\u00a0Ocean\u00a0have\u00a0also\u00a0incorporated roller skating culture in their music. Hollywood rode\u00a0on this wave by creating\u00a0movies, including:<em> Roller<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Boogie<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Xanadu<\/em>, as well as\u00a0TV\u00a0shows,\u00a0like\u00a0<em>Charlie<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Angels<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Chips<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0we can&#8217;t ignore the\u00a0social injustice\u00a0issues occurred\u00a0during\u00a0the 1970s\u00a0which, as a result,\u00a0promoted\u00a0the\u00a0sentiment of unity within roller skating rinks. During the\u00a0Groovy\u00a0Era;\u00a0many African Americans, women, gays and lesbians,\u00a0as well as\u00a0other marginalized groups of people fought for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.khanacademy.org\/humanities\/us-history\/postwarera\/1970s-america\/a\/liberation-movements-1970s\">their rights<\/a>.\u00a0For instance, the fight for women&#8217;s rights caused Congress to approve the\u00a0Equal\u00a0Rights\u00a0Amendment in 1972, which\u00a0states, &#8220;Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.&#8221; The environmental movement to address industrial waste, dangerous meltdowns at nuclear power plants\u00a0and\u00a0pollutions, prompted Congress to pass the\u00a0National\u00a0Environmental\u00a0Policy\u00a0Act. During this time,\u00a0the infamous\u00a0Watergate scandal made many people stray away from politics\u00a0thus\u00a0focus more on pop culture. People grew their hair out,\u00a0they\u00a0didn&#8217;t shave\u00a0but\u00a0smoked weed\u00a0and\u00a0psychedelics, while\u00a0openly\u00a0embracing\u00a0their\u00a0sexualities. They also enjoyed roller skating and wore clothing that showed symbols of\u00a0peace signs to guide their way of living.<\/p>\n<p>Though we have made a great among of progress in fighting against systematical marginalization in the past, we are still fighting years later. But in the words of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Evolution-Skating-Live-Love-Tell-ebook\/dp\/B08WPCCB5P\">five authors<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<em>The<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Evolutions of<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Skating:<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Live,<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Love,<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Sk8<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>To<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Tell<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>It<\/em>,\u00a0\u201cGreat skaters are not great because of their technique, but are great because of their passions.\u201d\u00a0The passion is not only in their skating but their fight for harmony in troubling times.
